What are the best reasons for homeschooling your child?
51My Reasons
Parents choose to homeschool their children for a variety of reasons. They range from problems with the school, teacher, or other kids to the child just not being challenged enough. I will focus on my reasons.
When my twins were in 4th and 5th grades, it became a nightmare. They had homework every night and I had to spend hours teaching the subjects. On top of all that, if they forgot one of their assignments, they received a "check" and after 3 (in a six week period) had to go to Saturday school (to further punish the parent as well). It was ridiculous. I felt so bad for my children. They worked so hard and I did not see the point in making them sit through another hour to cover one more subject. What did they do in school all day? I just did not see why they should be punished so harshly. When I was in school, if a child forgot their homework, they were given a bad grade. Now, they have "in school suspension" and "Saturday School."
On the other end of the spectrum, some children need more of a challenge than what public schools can offer and not all parents can afford a private school. My oldest is a freshman in high school, but I teach her using college textbooks. In addition to the entire curriculum required for high school, she has time to pursue her other interests. In public schools, she would be bored and less likely to follow her dreams.
The truth is, many public school teachers are even choosing to homeschool their own children. Public school teachers have certain material they must cover in a specific amount of time in addition to standardized testing. They do not have time to teach the children resulting in more homework that requires more parental involvement. If a child spends 7 hours or more in school and then has 3 hours or more of homework, when can a kid be a kid? Is it fair for a child to spend 10 hours a day "working?" What is the point? If the parent has to teach the child anyway, why not just homeschool? And what about the child that makes the grade easily. Are they noticed and given the opportunity to be challenged? No, teachers do not have time anymore. Not in the public school systems anyway. The only way for a child to really succeed in this world, they must be given the opportunity to learn more and have a life.
